What is the formation lap in F1?
The single lap the field completes behind no one to reach the grid, warming tyres and brakes before the start.
The formation lap, sometimes called the parade lap, is the lap the cars complete from the grid before the race actually starts. Drivers weave and brake hard to build heat into their tyres and brakes, then return to their grid slots for the standing start. No overtaking of the order is allowed, and a driver who has a problem must let cars past and start from the back or the pit lane. Once every car is stationary in its slot, the five red lights sequence begins.
