F1 points system 2026: how F1 scoring works
In a Grand Prix the top ten finishers score on a 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 scale — 25 points for the win down to a single point for tenth. On the 6 sprint weekends a shorter Saturday race pays the top eight an extra 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1. There is no fastest-lap point in 2026.

Every Formula 1 Grand Prix awards points to the top ten finishers only. The winner takes 25 points, and the total falls away down to a single point for tenth place. Everyone from eleventh back scores nothing, however close the finish:

Sprint points (8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1)
On a sprint weekend there is an extra, shorter race on the Saturday. Only the top eight score in the sprint, on an 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 scale — 8 points for the sprint win down to one for eighth. These are a separate, smaller haul on top of Sunday’s Grand Prix:

There is no fastest-lap point (since 2025)
For several seasons an extra point was awarded to the driver who set the fastest lap, provided they finished in the top ten. That bonus was scrapped after the 2024 season, so it no longer exists in 2026. Many older explainers still list it — a driver’s total in 2026 is simply the sum of their Grand Prix and sprint finishing points, with no fastest-lap bonus.
Drivers’ vs constructors’ championship
Formula 1 runs two parallel championships off the same points. The Drivers’ Championship goes to the driver with the most points they personally scored. The Constructors’ Championship goes to the team whose two cars score the most points combined — so a team with two consistent point-scorers can beat a team that has the single fastest driver but a weaker second car. Most points in a single weekend
On a normal weekend the most one driver can score is 25 — a Grand Prix win. On a sprint weekend the ceiling rises to 33: 25 for winning the Grand Prix plus 8 for winning the Saturday sprint. That is why a strong sprint Saturday can swing a tight title race.
Reduced points if a race is stopped early
If a Grand Prix is red-flagged and cannot be resumed, the points awarded depend on how much of the race distance was completed. A graduated reduced-points scale applies: no points below a minimum distance, then partial points, then the full 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 scale once enough of the race has run. This graduated system replaced the old blanket “half points” rule after the shortened 2021 Belgian Grand Prix.
