What is the halo in F1?

The titanium hoop around the cockpit that protects the driver's head from debris and impacts.

The halo is a curved titanium structure fitted above and around the cockpit opening. Introduced in 2018, it is designed to deflect large debris, wheels and other cars away from the driver's head, and is strong enough to bear the weight of a bus. Though controversial when it arrived on looks alone, it has since been credited with protecting drivers in several serious accidents. It is mandatory across single-seater racing, not just Formula 1.
